Pantheatre organizes a second On Scandal workshop at La Locanda del Gallo
(the first was in summer of 2000.) Everything about this project is idyllic...
The warmth and generosity of the Italian hosts, the isolated location, the food,
the swimming pool, the studio... A perfect setting for the study and practice
of artistic scandal!
project is open to all: if some of the presentation
seems rather technical, the work is more a question of initiative and personnality
rather than professional knowhow. The success of these projects is due, to a large
extent, to the mixture of participants (backgrounds and nationalities.)
Pardo will direct a 3 hour session in the mornings in choreographic theatre, in
the afternoons the group will divide in two to work on voice and singing with
Linda Wise and Liza Mayer (including extended ranges Roy Hart techniques.) Evenings
we will meet for readings and discussions including Stephen Karcher and other
special guests. Stephen
Karcher, who is
the co-author of the prestigious Eranos Foundation of the Yiging (I Ching), will
present his work on mantics and divination, and will be available for private
Idea of Scandal
the etymogical heart of scandal, there is a trap, an obstacle: the
stumbling block. This is a workshop about scandalous exceptions, about tripping
esthetical paradigms. A scandalous move reveals an amazing state of grace, or
is seen as a total disgrace: it depends on your stand, on which God's esthetical
ground you stand, or 'understand'...
what about ethics? Scandal has a close cousin in "slander", it relishes
moral offence, indecency... The one thing scandal always brings is iconoclasm,
something most of us consider crucial in art.
theatrical and vocal work (5 to 6 hours a day) will be based on the idea that
"artistic rules are made to confirm the exceptions". A scandalous idea?
Possibly, but built on subtle and rigorous disciplines.
Work on Scandal
work starts with ensemble disciplines, with the organization of space and choreographic
patterns on stage, with the building of an imaginal context, a landscape of places
and relationships. Each participant brings her or his style of movement and artistry
to the work: previous experience of dance or physical training is not necessarily
the point: what is important is the capacity to make a move - and it does
not have to be physical; it might imply making a counter-point in
order to achieve scandal: upsetting expectations, outwitting predictions,
creating new perspectives and priorities.
These same procedures will apply
to the work with texts (each participant brings a working text - see below): how to master
a text in terms of diction, emotion, expressivity, and then, how to allow the
text to yield radical, unexpected interpretations: how can texts turn on their
shadows, betray their authors or our cultural expectations. Versions, subversions,
Pardo and Linda Wise's approach to physical theatre explodes the interpretation
of texts by stretching them into choreographic networks: language becomes a poetic
partner to image, and no longer its sovereign. Illustration yields to paradox.
Texts unfold new versions, including subversions and perversions. The body is
caught in complex images, while the voice harvests and expresses the emotion.
The work is sometimes described as "playing the piano with three hands",
since it involves parallel training on movement, language and voice, their interconnections
and, especially, their disassociations. Not cool chance collage work, but synthesis,
involving actor and person. It explores fully the training and poetics of contemporary
becoming a controlled musical instrument, or the modulated support of language,
the voice is a fabulous means of expression, linked to our innermost impluses.
Each sound, from the most ethereal sigh to a wrenching scream, from the highest
coloratura to the lowest of growls, must claim its place in our artistic imagination.
To extend the expressive fields of the voice requires a certain courage of extroversion,
but it also renews the very notion, the very pleasure of "singing".
Although such an approach to vocal expressivity is anchored in musical forms of
discipline, it is, nevertheless, open to everyone, regardless of any previous
musical or artistic experience." |
most obvious mythological scandal monger is Aphrodite; at the Myth and Theatre
Festival dedicated to Aphrodite (in 1993), Enrique Pardo presented
a talk on some of the great scandals in Art History, beginning with the (in)famous
Choice of Paris (he got Helen, a married woman!) This scandal started
the Trojan War. It also gave us The Illiad! Modern art emerged through
a series of Aphroditean scandals: Manet's nude in Déjeuner sur l'Herbe
was a massive scandal at the time, as was Picasso's Les Demoiselles d'Avignon:
a brothel scene. Aphrodite has a knack for provocation and radical change in art.|
Mind you, Hermes' dalliances can also be pretty scandalous; some think Zeus' philanderings
are a scandal (patriarchal cultural scandal). Contemporary studies in mythology,
especially since James Hillman, have to wake up psychologically. There is scandal
in the shadow of every divinity, and it triggers some of the best insights and
Participants are asked to chose and learn by heart a working text - minimum
250 words - free genre, preferably contemporary. It does not have necessarily
to be a theatre text, nor, necessarily a scandalous text, or a text about scandal...
Please avoid Shakespeare, unless you really cannot help it! The work starts with
this choice, and then the learning of it: the more you know a text 'by heart',
the more freedom you will have to work with it.
as part of the studio work, or in meetings in the late afternoon and evenings,
we will discuss the implications of the notion of scandal, the work of Pantheatre,
mythology, and other topics rising from the work. Pantheatre is extending an invitation
to a special guest to join us for feed-back and discussions.
